Medical Workers On Strike

In October the medical workers of Baikit district of Evenk Autonomous region went on strike. Their main demands are the following : to get the salaries owed from April, to receive funds to get medical supplies for the hospitals and clinics (there are no even the most essencual drugs), get funds to feed the stationary patients (many are starving and doctors and nurses are bringing what ever they can from their own meager homes). At this point the strike is stopped since the regional authorities began to deliver the back pay and some money for the hospital operations and medication. But if the situation will not improve the doctors and nurses will strike again.

Environmental Hazards in Chukchi Land

The environmental situation in Tchaun district, Chukchi Autonomous Region is catastrophic. Due to the past and present mining activities the fragile arctic environment is ruined. Many rivers and lakes have high % of oil and gasoline discharge from the machinery in the water. Throughout the tundra the rusty used barrels are strewed. There is no sewer cleaning systems in town and villages. The Regional administration is developing further plans to set up various mining and oil and gas exploratory projects. That the most definitely means that the environmental situation in Western Chukotka will get even worse. And that, in turn, the most definitely will lead to the decline of the reindeer population and to various health problems for the indigenous population of the region. And what can we do?
