 Training course “Education in the Field of Human Rights and Rights of Indigenous Peoples” in Moscow

LIENIP NewsInterregional public organization “L’auravetl’an Information and Education Network of Indigenous Peoples” held a training course “Education in the Field of Human Rights and Rights of Indigenous Peoples” in Moscow on 13-20 October, 2009. Former interns of Regional Centers of Altai Krai and Altai, Khakass, Karelian Republics, representatives of public organizations and indigenous communities took part in it.
The training course’s program included meetings with such representatives of federal authority as: Aleksey P. Zenko, deputy director of the Department for Interethnic Relations for the Regional Ministry of Development within the Russian Federation; Andrey A. Nikiforov, deputy director of the Department for Humanitarian Affairs and Human Rights for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expert of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues of the Russian Federation; Gennady D. Oleynik, chairman of the Committee on Issues of the North and Small-Numbered Peoples of the Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation; Piotr A. Yakhmenev, head of the Secretariat of the State Duma Committee on North and the Far East Problems; Dirk Hebecker, Senior Human Rights Advisor to the UN Country Team in the Russian Federation; Viktoria Kharchenko, coordinator of consistent program “National Minorities in Russia: Development of Languages, Culture, Mass-Media and Civil Society”.
Interns received information about the committees’ activities. They got the answers to their questions concerning legislation, traditional land use areas, benefits and subsidies, project activity. The training course participants were in the press conference of Stephen James Anaya, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people, who visited the Russian Federation and met indigenous representatives living in remote territories. During the press conference interregional public organization “L’auravetl’an Information and Education Network of Indigenous Peoples” presented Stephen James Anaya with translations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to indigenous languages of the Russian Federation.
