A workshop "Reproductive rights of Indigenous Women of Khakass Republic" was held on 21-23 June in Khakassia. It was organized by Khakass regional public organization "Information Center of Indigenous Peoples of Khakass Republic "Aran Chula" and endowed by Interregional public organization "L’auravetl’an" Information and Education Network of Indigenous Peoples".
20 people - representatives of Khakases and Shors from Abakan, Anchul and Matur Villages of Tashtyp District of Khakass Republic and from Tashtagol of Kemerovo Oblast – took part in the workshop. Among the participants there were community activists, teachers, health workers and youth for whom the issues raised at the workshop were particularly important and relevant. After all, health and future of the people and preservation of the ethnic group were at stake.
After the lecture on "Healthy Lifestyle as the Basis of Population Growth and Family Well-Being" prepared by the ñhairman of Information Center "Aran Chula" L.N. Nerbyshev there was a lively discussion. People shared their painful problems: that alcohol and drugs which are in no way connected with traditional culture of our people can lead us to a demographic catastrophe, and what each of us can do to prevent it. L.N. Nerbyshev promised that the seminar on this topic is being prepared and will be held in the autumn.
We thank Center for Family Planning and Reproduction for their assistance in organizing and conducting of the workshop and personally its chief physician Ekaterina A. Kozhevnikova, Honored Physician of Khakass Republic, and the deputy minister of national and territorial policy of Khakass Republic Larisa V. Anzhiganova.
Lev Nerbyshev,
Director of "Aran Chula"
