Meeting with the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of Indigenous Peoples

On July 15, during the third session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Geneva, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous peoples, James Anaya, met with representatives of the interregional public organization "L’auravetl’an" Information and Education Network of Indigenous Peoples". During the meeting Gulvayra Shermatova noted positive trends in the legislation of the Russian Federation since the last visit of Mr. Anaya to Russia. In particular the draft law amending the Federal Law "On territories of traditional nature use of indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East" was submitted to the government, as well as the project of Evenki hydropower plant was excluded from the general layout of the hydropower objects of Russia. Olga Etylina introduced a new organization - the Commonwealth of Communities of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East and also told about the goals and objectives of the organization acting as its executive director. Grigory Dyukarev, vice president of the Association of Indigenous Peoples of Taimyr, spoke about the pressing problems of Taimyr peoples whose ancestral lands are being put up for auctions and bought by representatives of industrial companies.
In conclusion James Anaya said that the report on the results of his visit to Russia had been completed and translated into Russian.
